So I'm in my favorite Village book store yesterday (the Strand, at Broadway & 12th), and what do my wandering eyes espy but a new novel by Joe Gores, "Spade And Archer - A Prequeal To 'The Maltese Falcon.' "
Some of us may remember that Gores is a long-time (and very good) writer of pulp pastiche. He penned the novel "Hammett" many years ago, which recounted the adventures of the struggling fiction writer and former private eye, and was an excellent read.
I didn't buy "Spade & Archer" right then - I know, how could I resist, right? But I had my sights set on another book. On MY current budget, one a week's my limit, cheap as the Strand is.
But I'll be going back for it soon, and will give a full report to all interested suspects here on the Board.
Unless somebody beats me to it. Anybody read this thing yet?
Have a great week, gang.
